LEARNING DISABILITIES

Learning disabilities affect 1 in 10 children. From 5 years old, certain irregularities affecting school performance and interpersonal relationships can be detected; This is one of the major issues that many parents are concerned about.
Generally, students with these disabilities work hard at following directions. They concentrate well and behave  both at home and at school. The difficulty they have is the time it takes to capture, process, master and develope the tasks and information given to them. A child with this type of problem can not perform on the same level as others, although their level of intelligence is exactly the same.

How to detect learning disabilities in children.
The child with learning disabilities presents unusual patterns when perceiving external information. Usually when a child has learning difficulties, their behavior falters. Both parents and teachers need to be aware of the signs that come before the problem:
  • Difficulty understanding and following tasks and instructions. An example of this is how repetitive the instructions must be given before the child responds.
  • Trouble remembering what is told to them. It is advisable to ask the child what they learned in their classes to see just they are capturing or what is being lost.
  • Difficulty mastering the basic skills of reading, spelling, writing and math, thus generally causing failure to complete classwork.
  • Difficulty distinguishing between left and right, word identification, etc. Often letters and numbers are written backwards or simply out of order.
  • Lack of coordination. This can be observed in their walking, with sports or performance of simple activities such as tying a shoelace.
  • Easy to lose personal items or school supplies such as books, pencil, and other objects.
  • Difficulty understanding the concept of time. Confusing "yesterday" with "today" and or "tomorrow."
  • Tendency to express excitement or irritation easily.

It is believed that learning disabilities are caused by some dificientcy with the nervous system that affects receiving, processing and communicatiing information.
Learning disabilities can be treated with satisfactory results. If the problem goes undetected for enough time, the situation could be more difficult to resolve. As children begin to feel apathy for studying, they then can become emotionally detached, causing other problems such as low self-esteem, or an inability to succeed..
Sometimes family or individual psychotherapy and medications need to be prescribed to reduce the effects of hyperactivity and distractions.
It is important to reinforce the child's confidence. It is vital for their development. This permits parents and other family members to better understand and cope with the realities of living with a child with learning disabilities.
